Your First Sewing Kit: The 9 Things You Actually Need

Here's the quick answer — your complete starter kit is nine things: fabric scissors, a seam ripper, pins, hand needles, machine needles, a tape measure, tailor's chalk, all-purpose thread, and fabric. Everything else is a someday. Total cost: less than a takeaway for two.
The nine, and why each earns its place
1. Fabric scissors — one decent pair of dressmaking shears, used on fabric and nothing else. Paper blunts them; guard them like the family silver. The single most important purchase on this list.
2. Seam ripper — the little hooked tool that undoes stitches. Everyone unpicks; the ripper makes it a shrug instead of a tragedy. Never sew without one within reach.
3. Pins — glass or pearl-headed so they're visible and iron-safe(ish). Forty is plenty.
4. Hand needles — an assorted pack covers buttons, hems and repairs.
5. Machine needles — universals for wovens, plus a ballpoint pack the day you meet jersey. Fresh needle every big project; they're pennies.
6. Tape measure — fabric bends and so must your ruler. The classic 150cm tape.
7. Tailor's chalk — marks that brush away. Where the pattern says "mark this," chalk is how.
8. All-purpose thread — one quality polyester spool (Gütermann is the safe answer) in a neutral, then colours per project. Skip bargain-bin thread; it snaps and teaches you to hate sewing.
9. Fabric — a metre of forgiving cotton poplin to learn on.
What you genuinely don't need yet
An overlocker (your machine's zigzag does the job), a rotary cutter and mat (scissors are fine for years), fancy presser feet, or a £50 scissor upgrade. The someday list stays someday until a project demands it — buying tools for skills you haven't met yet is how sewing boxes fill with regret.
