Cotton poplin is the fabric we hand to every beginner and the fabric professionals never stop using: a crisp, smooth, tightly woven cotton that holds still while you cut, feeds evenly through the machine, presses into knife-sharp seams, and forgives unpicking without a mark. If sewing has a perfect classroom, this is it.
Its uses never run out — shirts and blouses, summer dresses and skirts, children's clothes, quilting, bunting, cushions, linings. The crispness gives structure to simple shapes, and poplin's fine weave takes prints beautifully.
The one ritual: pre-wash before cutting, as with all cottons — poplin shrinks its few percent on the first hot wash and never again. Universal needle, straight stitch, zigzag the edges, done.
